Literacy Blog #7

My book, The Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan, is similar to a movie called the Sorcerer’s Apprentice. It reminds me of this because in both they have mythical creatures. For example in The Titan’s Curse they have creatures like satyrs. In the Sorcerer’s Apprentice they have sorcerers. These are different because through the book Percy and his friends are moving from place to place not really staying in one spot.  As in the Sorcerer’s Apprentice they stay in one spot the entire time, New York City. But they both end up in big cities. As I said the Sorcerer’s Apprentice is in New York City, and in The Titan’s Curse they end up in San Francisco. They both are similar because the things that happen in the book are very unrealistic, they could not happen in your everyday life. The main characters however are very different. In the Sorcerer’s Apprentice the main character is very timid and does not a very good self-esteem. The main character Percy is really brave and spontaneous.  They look alike though. Both have dark hair, average or thin build, not very tall, and pale skin. They both are loyal too. In the Sorcerer’s Apprentice at first he doesn’t want to be a sorcerer but then he remains loyal to the Sorcerer and becomes one as well.  Percy however is very loyal and the main point of his trip was to find his friend Anabeth. Even though the book and the movie have differences they are still similar so that is why I chose that movie to talk about.

Literary Blog #4

So far in The Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan, my favorite scene would probably have to be when Percy and his friends go to the Garden of Hesperides. The Garden of Hesperides is where the Apples of Immortality were planted. People said if someone was to eat and apple, they would become immortal. The circumstance in this scene is Percy ,Zoe and Thalia are  at the garden and Zoe must distract the dragon who guards the garden, Landon. So while she is doing that Percy and Thalia both go opposite ways to get into the garden. Their plan does not work very well because Zoe gets poisoned by the dragon. This takes place in front of the Garden of Hesperides, during the day before the Winter Solstice. I really liked this scene because it was fast moving and they were not wasting time on describing what things looked like. They described the scene and what was going on and used words that made the scene very exciting. I also liked this scene because Zoe sees her sisters again because she used to live at the Garden of Hesperides too, but then she betrayed her family and got sent away. I like how she sees her sisters because they are all really cold towards each other and I thought that , that part of the book was realistic because her sisters were still mad at her and that’s probably how regular people would act in that situation. Overall a good part in this book.

Literacy Blog Assignment #3

This post will be all about the style of writing of Rick Riordan in the book The Titan’s Curse. In this books the authors writing is very informal. His vocabulary is somewhat limited and not very challenging. He does not describe things in a very detailed way, but there is a little bit of description throughout the book. I would say the books difficulty level would be about for someone anywhere from grade 3 to grade 6. There is slang used in this book, and sometimes the characters talk in very short or incomplete sentences. His sentence structures consist of few simple sentences. It is mainly compound sentences and a couple complex sentences.  The sentences are medium length and many of them are dialogue. Well this book is organized into chapters. Within the chapters, they are divided into paragraphs. The text is very structured, which makes it very easy to follow and keep track of where you left off in the book.   I think Rick Riordan chose the write like this because the book is targeted towards children/teenagers. The way the book is written, it is informal so it is more appealing for people of that age to read, and easier to read as well.  I think the author chose to leave details out of the story  so it leaves more up to the imagination , also because it keep the story moving instead of talking about something minor for a whole page. I liked the author’s style because it was not talking about things that were not important in the story. The author stuck to the point of the paragraph and kept the story going, instead of being a slow boring story.

Literary Blog Assignment#2

The quote I chose from the story is “Green grass breaks through snow. Artemis pleads for my help. I am so cool.” (Riordan 47) This quote was said by the Sun God Apollo, he was with Percy and the Hunters to give them a ride back to Camp Half-Blood. The quote is actually a haiku Apollo said, because Apollo loves haiku poems ever since he visited Japan.  The metaphor in this quote is “Green grass breaks through snow.” (Riordan 47). This is a metaphor because grass can’t literally break through snow it’s impossible. Snow weighs a lot more then grass so that could not happen. I think he used a metaphor to exaggerate his words. He used this to say the grass is starting to show. It could also mean the winter is fading away and spring is coming. Another literary term the Rick Ridordan uses is imagery. When he says “Green grass breaks through snow” (Riordan 47) he is using visual imagery to describe the grass. I chose this quote because I think it is just a really random part in the book. Its 3 sentences that have nothing to do with each other. This quote is not really important to the story because it doesn’t really have anything to do with the main story line. However, it does speak of Artemis which she is pretty influential to the story line because if she had not been kidnapped the story would be completely different because the main purpose of the quest is to find Artemis.  I chose this quote because it is quite random and I think most things in my life up until this point have been out of the blue and somewhat random. It also does not really make sense and I think that many things that happen to me don’t really make any sense! So this was a memorable part of the book and that’s another reason why I chose it.

Literary blog # 1

   WARNING SPOILERS

One missing goddess, two new demigods, and the King of the Titans Kronos is rising. Could life be more complicated for the young demigod Percy Jackson?  The book I am currently reading is called The Titan's Curse by Rick Riordan. It is the third book of the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. During this exciting and fast-moving novel, Percy is faced with challenges, tough decisions, and new discoveries. Throughout the story Percy goes on a quest with Grover the satyr, 2 of the Hunters, and Thalia the daughter of Zeus. The demigods search here and there for Artemis, meanwhile Kronos is rising and ex-camper Luke is helping him with his evil plan. His plan is to take over Olympus and he will stop at nothing to do so. Percy goes along to help his friends find Artemis, but his mind is on other things. He is trying to rescue his close friend Annabeth and is distressed by the odd past of the two new demigods, Bianca and Nico Di Angelo. Bianca and Nico are new to Camp Half-Blood but no one is quite sure who their godly parent is. This novel is full of adventure and I would recommend it to anyone who likes Greek Mythology and adventure.

The protagonist in this book is named Percy Jackson. He is son of Poseidon; his mother is a mortal named Sally Jackson. In this book he is 14 years old. He has short black hair, sea green eyes, and average build. Percy is a very brave protagonist. In previous books this is proved many times. For example in the first book to the series, The Lightning Thief, Percy battles Medusa. He could have just run away but he faced Medusa. Percy is also a very loyal guy; he would do anything to help his friends. The whole reason he is going on the quest is to find his friend Annabeth! Another word I would use to describe Percy Jackson is humble. When he saves the day he does not go around bragging about it. One of Percy’s flaws would be a has a very quick temper. Sometimes he says things without thinking which gets the Gods mad at him from time to time. He can never seem to get along with the War God, Ares. For some reason Percy always gets mad when they are together, and he does not try and stop himself from saying something mean that could make Ares mad. Overall Percy is a very good person who always tries to help out.

This story takes place in the 21st century, I am guessing        anywhere from 200-2012 The story first starts at Westover Hall, a military school in Maine. Percy, Annabeth and Thalia are there to meet Grover and take the newly found demi-gods, Bianca and Nico Di Angelo, back to Camp Half-Blood. They were picking up demi-gods because it can be dangerous for them to be in the places that are not protected from monsters because monsters always seem to find them. Then they are all at Camp Half-Blood.. After this, the setting changes quite a bit throughout the story seeing as to they are on a quest so the group does not stay in the same spot the whole time. They go to places such as San Francisco. The military school in Maine reminds me of my old school. It sounds very royal looking and fancy. Camp Half-Blood also reminds me of a few things. It reminds me of school trip we went on because it sounds like they do various outdoor activities at Camp Half-Blood such as canoeing, archery, rock climbing and more.  It also reminds me of my old day camp I had to go too because of how they all have to sit with their cabin at lunch and we had to do that at the camp I went too as well.  So that is the setting for this novel.
